Are the best deals after Christmas?

Toyotathon runs until January, 6th

Merry Christmas! Yesterday, Netflix attempted to stream live sports yet again. After the epic failure during the (rigged) Tyson v Paul fight, I was excited to see the tweets if Netflix failed again. However, they fixed their server issues and streamed NFL without much buffering. I guess them buying the Women’s FIFA World Cup streaming rights may actually end up alright.

What is the newsletter about?

Short story: my first job was at Vineyard Vines. I was a horrible salesman for about five weeks. The employee discount was steep at 65% and compounded with other deals. They always started their “Whale of a Sale” the day after Christmas. That meant nearly everything was over 50% off plus the 65% employee discount. This meant an overpriced $100 pair of pants was a reasonable $32.5 before taxes. This got me thinking, why don’t we always wait until after Christmas?? We can celebrate the New Year with fireworks AND gifts. Anyway, here are some quick tips if you’re still reading.

Clothing

Retailers switch out their seasonal clothing in January and July. So after Christmas, winter clothing can be found at some steep discounts if found at all. By the end of December, pickings might be slim. If you struggle to find things your size during other months, you probably won’t have any luck in January. It is worth looking! After all, Vineyard Vines has a great sale…

I am not a fan of over consumption, and I am a fan of wearing the same jacket and layers over and over again constantly saying it doesn’t get cold enough often enough to justify a warmer coat. So if that’s you, check out the deals following Christmas. If there is something that fits and is on sale, it’s fate.

Still looking for an adult size of this.

Fitness Products

With the classic “get in shape” New Year’s resolution, fitness products sell out in December because next year, it will be different… This means companies discount their equipment in January when sales slow. You can find great deals on treadmills, bikes, rowers (the only thing you need), weights, etc.

OR! If you are really patient, you can wait even longer until the newly purchased equipment shows up on Facebook marketplace in March.

Consumer Electronics

Every year, the Consumer Electronic Show runs early January with big companies showing off prototypes and soon to be released tech. This means, just like clothes, retailers need to make room for some of the new tech coming out and move products that didn’t sell during Christmas. If you need a new TV and didn’t grab one during Black Friday, January could be your best opportunity.

Decorations

Not to point out the obvious, but holiday decorations have a pretty short window of usability. For the rest of the year, they sit in your attic. Walmart doesn’t put things in the attic. You can find some discount decorations to put immediately into the attic then take them out in 11 months as if they are brand new.

I am not a fan of buying things you don’t need. I don’t subscribe to the “the more you spend, the more you save” mantra. If you do need something, a little patience can save you some money!

It makes sense when you don’t think about it.

I probably should have written this letter earlier in the year. It doesn’t help you if you already bought the things… well. Keep this in mind for next year!

Debrief on Deck

Next week, we will review 2024. With a record breaking year in the stock market, inflation starting to come down (unlike the astronauts Boeing sent to the ISS), no homes for sale, and gold hitting all time highs, it was a year that broke the mold on expectations.
